Primary schoolchildren happy to tag along with the Prince’s Trust

Playing rugby at primary schools received a boost in late November thanks to an event organised by young people in the Prince’s Trust.

The young adult and teenage participants in the Trust’s 12-week personal development programme organised a Tag Rugby Community Challenge at Fort Regent on Wednesday 25 November in which approximately 60 children from four primary schools took part. Teams included:Rugby Develpoment Officer David McCormack addressing some of the children at the recent tag rugby festival organised by the Prince's Trust

The Trust called upon the coaching skills of David McCormack, Jersey’s Rugby Development Officer, to help with the event. The tournament was supported by FirstRand Private Wealth Management, which is also funding David’s grass roots coaching of rugby in the schools. A basketball tournament was also arranged for the afternoon.

Medals and prizes were presented to the participants in the tournament by Stephen Kearns, Chief Operating Officer of FirstRand Private Wealth Management.

This latest initiative is part of an ongoing four year collaboration between the Sports Community Development team and the Prince’s Trust. Over the years several hundred local children have taken part in sports events organised by the participants on the Prince’s Trust Community Programme.

Ted Pafitis, Team Leader, the Prince’s Trust, commented:
‘Arranging a sports event on behalf of local schools is an ideal opportunity for the young people on the programme. It brings together team working, planning, communication, preparation and problem solving but, primarily, it gives something back to the community. On this occasion, we were delighted to have been able to play a part in introducing schoolchildren to rugby through the Tag Rugby Community Challenge. We are grateful for the support we received from both the Community Development and Rugby Development Officers and from FirstRand in sponsoring this tournament.’
